About The Cancer Center

Cape Fear Valley Cancer Center is currently the third largest cancer facility in North Carolina. With a comprehensive range of advanced treatments and complementary medicines, Cape Fear Valley Cancer Center is a hub of healing for patients throughout the region.

The Cancer Center is accredited with commendation through the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer - the highest possible accreditation! This approval helps to ensure that our patients receive quality cancer care close to home.

We offer medical and radiation oncology to treat all your cancer needs. Medical oncology refers to treatment of malignant tumors through the use of drugs, such as chemotherapy. Radiation oncology requires the use of radiation to track and target tumors. Often times, these two treatment options are combined to provide the best outcomes possible for our patients.

In the near future, we are embarking on a significant infusion of new technology in the Department of Radiation Oncology, with two brand new state-of-the art linear accelerators slated to be installed by early 2011. Stereotactic radiosurgery capability will also be added. We recently installed a brand new 4-D, 16-slice Phillips Brilliance Big Bore CT simulator.

Many people, when faced with a diagnosis of cancer, want to learn as much as they can about their disease. The internet is filled with such information, and many people begin their search there. It can be difficult, however, to know whether the information is accurate.

Cape Fear Valley Cancer Center offers Resource Centers at both Cancer Center locations. They are open weekdays until 4:30 p.m., and have information that has been carefully chosen for accuracy. The materials in the Resource Centers come primarily from three reliable sources: the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the American Cancer Society and CancerCare.

For the latest cancer information, you can access CancerHelp, a touch-screen computer that includes easy to understand information on cancer drugs, diagnosis, treatment resources, coping and National Cancer Institute pamphlets. CancerHelp is located in each Cancer Center Resource Center and is updated monthly. Most of the information is available in both English and Spanish. You may print out any information you wish and take it home with you. Friends of the Cancer Center volunteers are available to assist you.

The Resource Center also has a growing collection of books, CDs, DVDs and videos. The collection includes educational, inspirational and humorous topics. Pamphlets, booklets and magazines are available to keep. Topics include cancer prevention, detection and treatment, grief and loss, complementary medicine and support. To check out materials, please ask a Friend of the Cancer Center volunteer for assistance.

In addition to the Resource Center, we offer the Oasis Complementary Medicine Program. This program is designed to give a holistic approach to cancer treatment - treating your mind, body and soul. The program offers individual sessions in massage therapy, reflexology and Healing Touch. Art therapy, nutrition classes and "Look Good…Feel Better®" sessions are also offered. Most are free, and all are relaxing, fun and informative. Some services may even help manage the symptoms experienced during traditional cancer treatments, like radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

The Oasis Program is open to those undergoing cancer treatment and those who completed treatment at the Cancer Center less than a year ago. For more information on the Oasis Program, please call (910) 615-4626.
