Transitional Year Home

Our Transitional Year Internship is an ACGME-accredited program designed for medical school graduates who have chosen a future specialty for which the categorical residency program requires a PGY-1 year as well as those who desire a broad-based year to assist them in making a career choice or specialty selection decision. The Transitional Year Internship is structured with a broad range of supervised inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences so each resident will be exposed to a wide variety of patients throughout their training. The program offers flexibility in design to allow for individual resident needs to be considered within the basic framework of the required services. Our program offers 13 positions each year with positions filled through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Our program code is 2128999P0. Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Graduates of our program are well prepared to enter their specialty training equipped to handle the demands of those programs. Currently, our programs are unable to administratively support visa sponsorship.

Residents are assigned rotations in general internal medicine, general surgery, pediatric medicine, ambulatory medicine and emergency medicine. Residents are also provided with elective rotations, which may include obstetrics and gynecology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, pulmonology, infectious disease, radiology, gastroenterology, otolaryngology, psychiatry or a surgical subspecialty, just to name a few.

Education for our Transitional Year residents is provided on a variety of rotation-specific clinical and non-clinical conferences, quarterly simulation skills sessions and didactic experiences organized by each of our categorical programs and the graduate medical education. Each year our residents will participate in a variety of research activities including case reports, case presentations, poster presentations, peer-reviewed publications, journal publications and scholarly projects of quality improvement and patient safety. Research oversight is provided by the hospital and sponsoring institute IRB. Our dedicated and engaged teaching faculty, across a variety of specialties, provide mentorship to our residents as they progress throughout their training year.
