Educational Goals

At Cape Fear Valley Health, our Transitional Year residency program is designed to prepare residents for a variety of categorical positions by providing a well-balanced educational program that covers multiple clinical disciplines. Upon completion, the Transitional Year resident will have a fundamental knowledge of preventative medicine and health maintenance and an appreciation of common disease entities and their evaluation and treatment.

Our ACGME-accredited Transitional Year program accepts 20 positions each year through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP; Program Code: 2128999P0). Our program is designed for those who already have definite plans for a categorical program or those who may need an additional year to decide on their career specialty.

Our residents are fully integrated and work closely with categorical residents in our internal medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, OB/GYN and psychiatry programs, as well as our cardiology fellows. During the intern year, our residents are expected to develop strong clinical skills that emphasize experience in our core rotations of internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine and family medicine to name a few. All of our training sites are located on the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center campus or in very close proximity within the community.
