The Emergency Medicine Residency at Cape Fear Valley Health strives to train future physicians to improve the quality of every life they touch. Our faculty, staff, and residents share the same values of teamwork, leadership, professionalism, integrity, diversity, and ethical treatment for all individuals. Cape Fear is an active trauma, stroke, and heart center enjoying top-performer status in several disease-specific certifications. With a unique patient mix that combines rural, urban, suburban, civilian, and military populations, we provide quality care to over 130,000 patients in our Adult and Pediatric Emergency Department, making us the busiest Emergency Department in the state of NC and one of the top twenty in the nation for over a decade. We serve as the primary referral center for multiple counties in southeastern North Carolina that have limited access to primary care. In addition, I-95 runs through Fayetteville and serves as the major north-south route for the eastern United States. This all combines to give us over 46,000 EMS visits a year, 7800 medical codes, and 2800 traumas. With a thirty-two percent admission rate, we truly see a population in breadth, depth, and complexity that is usually only encountered at large inner-city tertiary referral facilities.

With a priority placed on resident wellness, our location in the heart of North Carolina provides proximity to both some of the best beaches and the highest mountain ranges on the East Coast. Fayetteville is a younger city with a lot of activities and interests for families both indoors and outdoors. This gives our residents a lot of options for fun and relaxation in their ample downtime.

We believe that residency is the last best chance to create completely well-rounded physicians. Our four-year curriculum is set up to broaden the depth of medical knowledge while allowing each resident some flexibility in their education. From unique shift lengths with overlap to multiple electives and mini fellowships in the fourth year, our residents train at a pace and breadth that maximizes their residency experience.

The faculty at Cape Fear is comprised of a diverse group of physicians with a wealth of academic, military, and community experience. Additionally, several of the faculty have fellowship training in specialty areas including Peds EM, EMS, Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ultrasound, Hospital and ED Administration, and Wilderness Medicine. This dedicated group of teachers has a singular focus, which is to prepare our residents to face the ever-changing practice of Emergency Medicine while assisting them in becoming the best they can be for themselves and their patients.
