General Surgery Education Resources

The General Surgery Residency Program supplies residents with the educational resources to aid in the resident's learning environment. Residents have access to basic texts and web-based exercises; current peer-reviewed literature that assists with evidence-based practice; knowledge and skills acquisition through didactic lectures, simulation training, and conferences; supervised rotations involving educationally-sound clinical and cognitive experiences in the wards, clinics, and the operating rooms; and opportunity for basic, translational, clinical, educational, or other research. Additionally, the following resources are made available:

• American College of Surgeons Fundamentals of Surgery (pre-intern curriculum): FSC is offered to incoming interns/PGY1s in preparation for clinical responsibilities and real-life situations they will encounter. FSC modules are required to be completed before the end of the PGY1 year.
• Campbell University Medical School Library: CUSOM Medical Library offers 24/7 access to over 3,800 full-text electronic journals, thousands of books, Access Surgery, and many major medical information databases. Residents should stay updated on the latest evidence-based medical practice as journal articles are frequently circulated and discussed. The medical library also has a Patient Informatics Consult Service (PICS) program to provide patients and their families with health information. Because the practice of evidence-based medicine is of the highest priority, through synchronous services (Library Information Desk, SearchDoc, the Librarian On-Call, and Learning Site), staff expertise is available electronically 24/7.
• Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES): FES is a comprehensive educational and assessment tool designed to teach and evaluate the fundamental knowledge, clinical judgment, and technical skills required in the performance of basic gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic surgery (endoscopy)¹.
• Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS): FLS is a comprehensive web-based education module that includes a hands-on skills training component and assessment tool designed to teach the physiology, fundamental knowledge, and technical skills required in basic laparoscopic surgery².
• Surgical Council On Resident Education (SCORE): SCORE is a foundational resource for formal didactics. Residents are expected to complete the weekly TWIS assignments as well as associated quizzes. Residents are responsible for creating their self-study program which is monitored by the Program Director and Program Administrator.
• TrueLearn: An online application that offers ABS-styled questions to prepare residents for both ABSITE and board-certification.
• The latest editions of multiple surgical texts including but not limited to current editions of Sabiston's Textbook of Surgery, Cameron's Current Surgical Therapy, Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery: An Expositive Atlas, and Fischer's Mastery of Surgery are available to all general surgery residents through the CUSOM library.
• The Graduate Medical Education office hosts bi-monthly development activities for residents and faculty on topics such as quality improvement, clinical work and education, wellness, and fatigue management.
