PGY1 Acute Care Elective Focus

Current Residents

Amy Odum, PharmD
Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences

I am from Lumberton, North Carolina. My first job at the age of sixteen was working in an independent pharmacy. During this time, I fell in love with all there was to learn about pharmacy and being able to care for patients. I worked as a pharmacy technician for a long time before finally deciding to go back to school to pursue becoming a pharmacist.

Originally, I had planned to pursue retail pharmacy, but because of my experiences at Cape Fear Valley as a pharmacy student, I decided to apply for an acute care residency. I chose Cape Fear Valley because of the welcoming and supportive learning environment, as well as the quality of preceptors. As a student, I was able to see first-hand how much the preceptors care and invest in helping students and residents grow in their clinical knowledge. For these reasons, I knew this was the program for me because I knew I would be supported and challenged to grow as a new pharmacist.

My goal for this year is to challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone and to further develop my critical thinking skills and knowledge.

Taylor Patterson, PharmD
Wingate University School of Pharmacy

I was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. During a procedure as a child, I was on the receiving end of a medication error. This terrifying experience showed me the power of medicine and I knew I would pursue a career in healthcare. I completed high school with my Associate of Science in Biological Life Sciences Pathways. During this time, I completed a research project on the effects of direct-to-consumer advertising on medication selection for patient. I completed my pre-requisite studies at Wingate University before matriculation into Wingate University School of Pharmacy. During my fourth year of study, I had the pleasure of joining into the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Scholar's Program where I completed community service in the local free clinic, advanced rotations focusing on critical care, and a research project on the appropriateness of benzodiazepine dosing in status epilepticus.

Pursuing residency at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center was based on my intended pursuit of internal medicine and academia. I value the close relationship with Campbell University, the vast array of rotation experiences offered, and welcoming environment offered by the preceptors. I am excited to develop skills in providing didactic and experiential education, gain additional clinical training, and advance my medical writing skills. I plan to transition these skills into a PGY-2 in Internal Medicine/Academia and join a highly effective team of practice faculty at an accredited college or school of pharmacy.

Hunnain Siddiqui, PharmD
Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences

I grew up in Palm Beach, Florida and moved to North Carolina a little over 6 years ago. I completed my undergraduate education at North Carolina State University and obtained my PharmD from Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. I always knew that I wanted to be in the health care field but found out that I wanted to pursue pharmacy after I started as a pharmacy cashier at Walgreens Pharmacy while I was in high school. I realized that I wanted to pursue a residency after my hospital IPPE during my second year of pharmacy school.

What really drew me to the Cape Fear Valley PGY1 program was the multiple opportunities to teach and precept. Teaching has always been something that interested me but pushed me out of my comfort zone and I am looking forward to getting more comfortable with it throughout the year. By the end of this residency year, I hope to be confident in my clinical knowledge and be able to transfer my skills learned to my next adventure. I am excited for the opportunities provided by Cape Fear Valley and am looking forward to a great year ahead.

Anna Strahorn, PharmD
University of Florida College of Pharmacy

I grew up in Rockford, Illinois where I discovered a love of learning. Just before starting high school, I moved to Florida where I completed my Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences at the University of South Florida. While I have known I wanted to go into healthcare since I was young, I discovered pharmacy during my time at USF when a family member began experiencing a complex medical condition that required many trips to the pharmacy and questions for the pharmacist. I then completed my PharmD at the University of Florida in Gainesville with the intention of continuing my career in retail. Throughout pharmacy school, I had many experiences in student organizations and clinical rotations that led me to applying for residency.

I was originally drawn to Cape Fear Valley because of the variety of elective options, the teaching certificate, and the opportunity to fulfill my passion for working with underserved communities through service at the CARE clinic. During the recruiting process and my interview, I could tell that the preceptors and residents were committed to providing the best experience to fit each resident's needs and passions. I knew CFV was the perfect fit for me and that the team would help me grow into a well-rounded clinical pharmacist. I am looking forward to exploring my different clinical interests throughout my residency year, as well as my personal growth.
