FAYETTEVILLE – Oct. 8, 2019 – The clock is ticking for early entry into this year’s Cape
Fear Valley Diabetes Games.
Early registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 18.
Cost is $15 per child athlete. Late registration will then be held through
Friday, Nov. 1. Late entry cost is $25 per child athlete. The games will be
held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Methodist University.
Now in its second year, the Diabetes Games was
created to allow diabetic youths from across the state to show their athletic
prowess through safe and organized competition. The games include a mix of
traditional track and field events with more modern competitions, such as
obstacle course runs and bounce ball jousting.
Last year’s Diabetes Games allowed several
children to experience the thrill of competition for the first time. Diabetic
children often refrain from competitive sports due to their condition.
Once considered rare, type 2 diabetes has
reached epidemic proportions among U.S. adults, and now children are following
suit. Studies show the condition has grown more than 20 percent among youths,
age 10 to 19, between 2001 to 2009.
