Harnett Health Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to providing quality and personalized care to the residents of Harnett and surrounding communities. Our rural community is home to a medically underserved patient population, and our programs seek to improve access to care for our patients. In partnership with our sponsoring institution, we are committed to educating and training diverse and culturally competent physicians to practice in rural and underserved communities.
The Internal Medicine program is a leader in rural patient care, medical education, and research through our partnership with Campbell University School of Medicine. CUSOM’s large academic system combined with Harnett Health’s rural medicine experience produces a one-of-a-kind residency training experience.

The Harnett Health Internal Medicine Residency Program trains exceptional internists interested in the unique benefits of rural healthcare. Our residents are crucial to the health of Harnett County and its surrounding communities, and our program is helping to guide healthcare in an area with tremendous growth, to ensure medically underserved patient populations continue to thrive.

Continuity Clinic
The Internal Medicine residency clinic is housed in a 7,150 sq ft clinic. The clinic has 12 exam rooms, 9 resident workspaces, 4 faculty offices, and a large conference space.
Residents follow a panel of patients in their weekly continuity clinic throughout their three years of residency. Expertise in outpatient medicine is integral to internal medicine training, regardless of future career plans. The continuity clinic experience is one of the most important and meaningful of residency training. The resident is the primary care physician for their panel of patients, working in conjunction with the clinic attending. The resident forms a meaningful relationship with their patients through this experience.
The ambulatory care clinic months expose the residents to common acute care issues seen in primary care. Residents develop skills triaging patients, prioritizing medical issues, selecting appropriate investigations, and arranging proper follow-up care. Panel management is integrated into the resident’s clinic experiences.

Inpatient Training
Harnett Health has two hospitals, Betsy Johnson in Dunn, NC and Central Harnett in Lillington, NC. Betsy Johnson is where most of the residents’ inpatient training occurs, as it is the location for the surgical and endoscopy suites. Harnett’s cardiology services are located at Central Harnett and residents rotate there during night float, Senior Admitting Rotations, and hospitalists months.
Both hospitals have open ICUs so Harnett residents become very facile in critical care medicine as they care for ICU patients every day on the inpatient service. Residents have the opportunity to gain experience with procedures and many of our residents are independent performing arterial lines, central lines, endotracheal intubations, and paracentesis by graduation.
