Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation is honored to support the No One Dies Alone (NODA) Program, a compassionate volunteer initiative dedicated to providing companionship to patients during their end-of-life journey. This meaningful program ensures that inpatients passing away who do not have loved ones at their bedside, are not alone in their final moments.

Since its inception in 2025, the program has served hundreds of patients at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and Valley Hospice House, with more than 140 volunteers signing up to participate. Through donations to Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, every NODA patient receives comfort items that help preserve their dignity and provide a sense of peace. Each patient is given a soft blanket, and their loved one receives a handwritten card letting them know their family member was honored and cared for during their final journey. Volunteers utilize a “NODA Comfort Cart” which provides a peaceful, personalized environment catered to each patient’s wishes. Resources include a CD player, flowers, lotion, lip balm, books, rosary beads, prayer shawls and a Tibetan singing bowl.

Beyond bedside support, Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation recognizes the volunteers who make the NODA Program possible. New volunteers are invited to monthly bereavement sessions, and quarterly volunteer socials are held to acknowledge those who hold vigils with patients around the clock. These gatherings build a sense of community amongst volunteers and honor the dedication of those who ensure no one faces the end-of-life alone.

The NODA Program continues to be a beacon of light for our patients, families and team members and would not be possible without the generosity of our donors. As the program continues to grow, it will touch the lives of even more patients, creating a need for ongoing support. To help cover the cost of items available on the Comfort Cart, make a gift here.
