Cape Fear Valley Health hospitals earned A and B ratings in the Spring 2026 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, reflecting continued improvement in patient safety across the health system.
The results place Cape Fear Valley Health among hospitals demonstrating strong performance in patient safety across the region.
The latest grades include:
A for Cape Fear Valley Hoke Hospital
A for Central Harnett Hospital
B for Cape Fear Valley Medical Center
B for Betsy Johnson Hospital
Two hospitals earned the highest possible “A” rating in the latest report.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a national measure that evaluates hospitals on their ability to protect patients from preventable harm, including medical errors, injuries and infections.
“These results reflect years of focused work across our system,” said Dan Weatherly, CEO of Cape Fear Valley Health. “Earning two A’s and two B’s shows the progress we’ve made and the standard we continue to push toward.”
Dr. Michael Ruzek, Chief Quality Officer, said the improvement is the result of a sustained, systemwide commitment.
“This kind of progress does not happen without the dedication of our teams,” Ruzek said. “Every day, staff across our organization put patients first, pay attention to the details, and step in to ensure the highest possible level of care. That commitment is what moves us forward and makes a real difference for the patients we serve.”
In addition, our critical access and specialty hospitals also continue to thrive. Bladen County Hospital achieved a nationally recognized Geriatric Emergency Department accreditation, Joint Commission Accreditation in Pneumonia, and Joint Commission Accreditation in Sepsis. Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital achieved Joint Commission Accreditation in Respiratory Failure and Joint Commission Accreditation in Wound Care.
Leaders say the achievement reflects a growing culture of accountability and a systemwide commitment to safer care.
“We look forward to celebrating our success with our team, our Board Members and the community,” Weatherly said. “This is something our teams should be proud of.”
The Leapfrog Group assigns grades twice a year using publicly reported data and national performance standards to help patients make informed decisions about their care.
