The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County has awarded Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation with a $12,000.00 grant to support music therapy for patients in the Adult Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit and in the Dorothea Dix Adolescent Care Unit at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

“We are extremely grateful for The Art Council’s continued support of our Cape Fear Valley Health patients,” said Sabrina Brooks, Vice President of Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation. “We are eager to offer Music Therapy to our adolescent behavioral health patients, so they can express through music, what they may not be able to put into words.”

Music therapy provides patients, many who battle depression, stress, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and substance use disorder, a therapeutic activity. A music therapist can offer various forms of experiencing and creating music through various instruments, and writing or arranging lyrics, to express their feelings. Additionally, the music therapist will also provide individual music therapy sessions for those patients that may not be participating in the group for various reasons. At a given time, the Adult Unit usually has around 24 patients, with an average stay of 7 to 10 days, and the Adolescent Unit usually has around 12 patients, with an average stay of 4 to 5 days.

The Arts Council has also supported art therapy for behavioral health patients and cancer patients at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Project Support Grants increase opportunities for access to arts, cultural, and historical programming in Cumberland County. The grants are awarded to nonprofit agencies, institutions of higher education, and municipal entities in Cumberland County that demonstrate financial and administrative stability.
