About Mary Terrell, MD

Mary J. Terrell, MD joined Cape Fear Valley Medical Center as a full-time neonatologist in 2021. She is originally from Maryland and attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of Maryland at College Park and Baltimore, respectively. She completed both her residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a Fellow of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. She is board certified in Pediatrics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine.

Dr. Terrell is continually humbled by the strength of newborns and the resilience of their families. She considers it a privilege to be part of such a meaningful time in a family’s life and is committed to honoring that trust through compassionate and thoughtful care. She is particularly dedicated to quality improvement efforts that support breastfeeding, skin-to-skin and developmental care. She enjoys teaching and currently serves as Division Head of Pediatrics for the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine. She embraces lifelong learning as an essential part of her professional practice.

Married and a mother of four, she balances life outside the hospital by cheering from the sidelines as a soccer mom, pushing herself on the Peloton, or relaxing with a book, a crime podcast, or a documentary. She also loves the outdoors, from exploring new hiking trails (waterfalls are her favorite!) to simply enjoying time at the beach.
