Michael Nagowski

Chief Executive Officer
Michael Nagowski has been the CEO of Cape Fear Valley Health since 2008, guiding the system’s expansion to include eight hospitals, 80 clinics, and a graduate medical education program. He joined Cape Fear Valley after leading the largest hospital in his hometown of Buffalo, NY. Michael’s vision and dedication to healthcare have transformed the system into a fully integrated provider for the region. He holds a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Park College and an MBA from St. Bonaventure University. Michael is committed to making healthcare accessible to the community he serves.

Dan Weatherly

Daniel Weatherly

Daniel (Dan) Weatherly, Chief Operating Officer of Cape Fear Valley Health and President of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, has been with the system since 2011. He leads daily operations and is inspired by the direct impact his work has on patient care across multiple campuses. Dan began his career in healthcare as a physician relations manager and held key leadership roles before becoming COO in 2016. He holds a Bachelor’s in Marketing from the University of South Florida and an MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Administration from the University of St. Francis. Dan's leadership continues to enhance Cape Fear Valley’s operations.

Susan Dees

Susan Dees, RN

Susan Dees has been with Cape Fear Valley Health since 1990 and was promoted to Chief Nurse Executive in December 2024, now leading nursing across the health system. Her career in healthcare was inspired by a high school babysitting job that shifted her path from coaching to nursing. Susan holds a BSN from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MSN from Duke University. Over her career, she has served in various roles, including Assistant Patient Care Manager and Director of Patient Throughput. Her passion for ensuring exceptional patient care continues to make a lasting impact at Cape Fear Valley Health.

Bret Johnson

Bret Johnson, CPA

Bret Johnson, Chief Financial Officer, joined Cape Fear Valley in 2021 and oversees essential departments like Finance, Treasury, and Revenue Cycle. His dedication stems from over three decades of experience and a passion for the non-profit healthcare mission. Bret discovered his love for healthcare while working with a Big 8 public accounting firm. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Iowa and is a Certified Public Accountant. Bret’s leadership helps ensure Cape Fear Valley’s financial stability and supports its mission of promoting health in the community.

Dr. Samuel Fleishman

Samuel Fleishman, MD

Dr. Sam Fleishman, Chief Medical Officer at Cape Fear Valley since 2015, has been with the system since 1993. As the lead physician overseeing provider services, he focuses on patient safety and regulatory compliance. Inspired by his father, a respected physician, Dr. Fleishman has dedicated his career to improving patient care. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Doctor of Medicine from the Brody School of Medicine. His dedication to quality healthcare has left an indelible mark on the system and the community.

Phill Wood

Phill Wood, Chief Information Officer, has been with Cape Fear Valley since 2003 and became CIO in 2012. He has led the implementation of cutting-edge technology solutions like EPIC for electronic health records, improving healthcare efficiency. Phill’s dedication to innovation earned Cape Fear Valley recognition as one of the "Most Wired" healthcare systems. He holds a Bachelor’s from East Carolina University and an MBA from Syracuse University, combining technical expertise with a commitment to exceptional patient care.

Tom Powell

Thomas Powell

Thomas (Tom) Powell, Chief Legal Officer, has been with Cape Fear Valley Health since 2015. He leads Risk Management, Compliance, legal services, and the contract department, ensuring the organization operates with the highest legal and ethical standards. Before joining Cape Fear Valley, Tom served as Assistant General Counsel for Norton Healthcare. Tom’s commitment to healthcare law and compliance aligns with the mission of providing top-quality patient-centered care. Beyond his legal career, Tom is an avid artist, balancing his professional responsibilities with his creative passions.

Denver Hopkins

Denver Hopkins

Denver Hopkins, Chief Human Resources Officer, has been with Cape Fear Valley since 2021. Her leadership covers HR, Talent Acquisition, Training, HealthPlex, and Volunteer Services, helping to create a rewarding work environment. Denver’s healthcare career took on new meaning after the passing of her mother in a hospital, inspiring her to focus on the well-being of the workforce. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama, and her commitment to employee wellness ensures Cape Fear Valley staff can provide exceptional patient care.

Patronella Blue

Patronella (Pat) Blue, RN

Patronella “Pat” Blue serves as Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She began her career at Cape Fear Valley in 1991, rising through roles from Nursing Assistant to Corporate Critical Care Service Line Director, exemplifying her dedication to nursing and patient care. She holds an MSN in Nursing Leadership from Grand Canyon University and a Master’s in Healthcare Management from Troy University. Pat has led key initiatives, including ICU capacity management, COVID unit implementation, and expanded wound care services, all with a focus on improving patient safety. Her leadership and commitment to mentoring future nurses continue to make a lasting impact at Cape Fear Valley.

Michael Zappa, MD

Michael Zappa, MD

Dr. Michael Zappa has been with Cape Fear Valley since 2012, serving as Chief Clinical Officer. He leads Acute Care Operations, including Emergency Services and Trauma. Dr. Zappa is driven by a belief that every patient deserves the same care he would provide his own family. He holds an MD from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and completed his residency at the University of Florida. His leadership in clinical services has made a lasting impact on patient care across the system.

Dr. Michael Ruzak

Michael A. Ruzek, DO

Dr. Michael A. Ruzek joined Cape Fear Valley Health as Chief Quality Officer in November 2023. In this role, he oversees all Quality and Patient Safety initiatives across the system. Prior to Cape Fear, Dr. Ruzek was Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at Capital Health System in New Jersey, where he led Quality and Patient Safety efforts for emergency services. He is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician and holds a Certified Physician Executive (CPE) degree. Dr. Ruzek earned his Bachelor’s from Rutgers University and his Medical degree from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Mark Cobb

Mark Cobb

Mark Cobb serves as President of Cape Fear Valley Medical Group, bringing nearly a decade of experience with Cape Fear Valley Health System, including previous leadership roles such as Director of Physician Practices, President of Bladen Healthcare, and Corporate Director of Operations for the Ambulatory Medical Group. Before returning to Cape Fear Valley, he held positions as Chief Operations Officer at FirstHealth of the Carolinas Physicians Group and Administrative Director FirstHealth Physicians Group Acute Care Medical Services. Mark holds a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State University and both an MBA and MHA from Trident University. Driven by a passion for leadership and a commitment to community well-being, Mark is dedicated to creating positive change in healthcare by enhancing patient care, efficiency, quality, and access. His favorite part of his role is shaping exceptional patient experiences and helping the community thrive.

Michael Tart has been with Cape Fear Valley since 2014 and currently serves as President of Cape Fear Valley Harnett Healthcare. Inspired by family healthcare experiences in his youth, Michael is passionate about improving healthcare for others. Throughout his career, he has taken on key roles, including Director of Physician Practices and VP of Ambulatory Services. Michael holds a Bachelor’s in Biology and an MBA in Healthcare Administration from East Carolina University.

Spencer Cummings

Spencer Cummings

Spencer Cummings has been with Cape Fear Valley since 1993 and was appointed President of Bladen County Hospital in October 2023. He has served in various roles, including VP of Surgical Services and site President of Health Pavilion North. Spencer’s dedication to Cape Fear Valley stems from his genuine desire to care for people and make a meaningful impact. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center and an MBA from Fayetteville State University. His commitment to the organization is reflected in his continued leadership.

Sonja McLendon

Sonja McLendon

Sonja McLendon, FACHE, joined Cape Fear Valley as President of Hoke Hospital in July 2024. Before this, she served as Chief of Operational Excellence at Northeast Georgia Health System and Interim President of the NGMC Barrow and NGMC Lumpkin campuses. Sonja holds a Bachelor’s in Biology from UNC, a Master’s in Education from the University of Virginia, and an MBA from the University of South Carolina. In her new role, Sonja is focused on enhancing patient care and operational excellence at Hoke Hospital, leveraging her extensive experience.

Brian Pearce

Brian Pearce

Brian Pearce began working with Cape Fear Valley in 1998 and currently serves as Vice President of Operations and Development. His role includes oversight of Radiology, Oncology, Laboratory, Engineering, Construction, Support Services, Security, along with EMS, Safety, and Patient Relations. Brian's motivation comes from the satisfaction of serving his community, where he was born and raised. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Paramedic Executives. His educational background includes an MBA with a concentration in Healthcare and a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, blending clinical and engineering expertise to drive growth at Cape Fear Valley.

Chaka Jordan

Chaka Jordan

Chaka Jordan has served as Vice President of Marketing & Communications at Cape Fear Valley Health since October 2020. With over 25 years of healthcare experience, Chaka has revitalized her team and expanded the organization’s reach. Her passion for healthcare was ignited by her empathy and drive to make a difference. She holds a Bachelor’s in Public Health from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master’s in Health Administration from UNC-Charlotte. Before joining Cape Fear Valley, Chaka worked at hospitals across the country, most recently in Illinois, but felt called to return to her home state of North Carolina.

Bart Fiser

Bart Fiser

Bart Fiser has been with Cape Fear Valley since 2010, serving as Vice President of Corporate Revenue Cycle, Payer Contracting, and Accountable Care programs. His passion for healthcare began in middle school and solidified after shadowing a hospital COO in high school. He plays a key role in ensuring the financial health of the organization and finds inspiration in the commitment of his colleagues, who make Cape Fear Valley feel like family. Bart holds a Bachelor’s in Health Administration from the University of Kentucky and a Master’s in Health Administration from Xavier University.

Kevin Jackson

Kevin Jackson

Kevin Jackson, Vice President of Operational Excellence, has been with Cape Fear Valley since 1988. He applies system optimization principles to improve healthcare delivery and is passionate about ensuring timely, high-quality care for the community. Throughout his career, Kevin has held various Vice President and President roles in the health system. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of North Carolina and holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from NC State University. He also has an MBA from Campbell University and a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, bringing a wealth of knowledge to his role in improving healthcare services.

Sandy Godwin

Sandy Godwin, Vice President of Planning, has been with Cape Fear Valley Health since 1987. She oversees corporate planning, service line development, and system budgets. Sandy’s commitment to the community and her extensive experience in financial and strategic management have made her an integral part of the organization’s success. She holds a Bachelor’s in Accounting from the University of Wilmington and an MBA from Campbell University.

Jeff Nolte

Jeffrey Nolte, Vice President of Supply Chain, has been with Cape Fear Valley since 2012, overseeing Supply Chain and Clinical Technology Services. His work ensures efficiency and cost-effectiveness in healthcare delivery. Previously transitioning from manufacturing, Jeff takes pride in supporting affordable healthcare while working with colleagues who share the same goal. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Logistics from Penn State University and is a Certified Supply Chain Professional. His dedication to patient care and operational efficiency makes him an invaluable leader.

Dr. Don Maharty

Donald Maharty, DO

Dr. Donald Maharty has been with Cape Fear Valley Health since 2015, leading Graduate Medical Education (GME) and overseeing residency and fellowship programs. He finds great joy in witnessing the growth of residents into skilled physicians. Dr. Maharty’s commitment to healthcare began with a desire to help those in distress, and his journey was shaped by experiences that solidified his passion for patient care. He holds a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Master of Arts in Ministry Leadership from Central Christian College of the Bible.

Stephen Fife has been with Cape Fear Valley Health since 2014 and currently serves as President of Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital. He also oversees the health system’s Rehabilitation Services (both inpatient and outpatient). Previously, he was President of the Cape Fear Valley Medical Group and before that was President of Bladen County Hospital until October 2023. Stephen began his career at Cape Fear Valley as Director of Finance and holds a BS in Accounting from UNC-Wilmington and an MBA from East Carolina University. His leadership is driven by collaboration and a dedication to improving patient care.

Dr. Sandra Carr-Johnson

Sandra Carr-Johnson, MD, MHSA

Dr. Sandra Carr-Johnson serves as Chief Medical Officer for the Medical Group at Cape Fear Valley Health. With over 25 years of experience as a Family Physician, Dr. Carr-Johnson is known for her commitment to patient care. She collaborates with leadership to enhance quality and innovation in ambulatory services. Before this, she was Associate Chief Medical Officer for the Ambulatory Network, Medical Director of Stedman Wade Health and served as Chairwoman of the Cape Fear Valley Health Board of Directors. Dr. Carr-Johnson earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston.

Sabrina Brooks, Vice President of Foundation, has been with Cape Fear Valley since 2010. She leads philanthropic efforts through the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, helping secure resources that enhance patient care. Sabrina’s passion for healthcare was sparked when her son was hospitalized, deepening her commitment to the community. She holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MBA from Western Carolina University. Sabrina’s leadership continues to impact healthcare services across the region positively.

Hershey Bell

Hershey Bell, MD, MS

Dr. Hershey Bell joined Cape Fear Valley in August 2021 as Vice President and Chief Academic Officer, as well as Founding Dean of the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine. He is dedicated to advancing healthcare and education in the region. Dr. Bell’s career was inspired by his work as an academic family physician, where he forged meaningful patient connections. He holds an MD from the University of Toronto and completed his residency at Duke University. His contributions to medical education and healthcare leadership continue to leave a lasting impact.

John Worth

John Worth

John Worth currently serves as Vice President of Administration & Finance and has been with Cape Fear Valley Health since November 2017. He has been instrumental in advancing the system’s medical education strategy and managing its financial operations. As part of his role, John also served as interim CFO for Harnett Health. His previous experience includes three years as Associate Dean of Administration and Finance for the School of Nursing at Emory University, as well as leadership positions at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and West Virginia University. John holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Buffalo.

Dr. Todd Jackson

Todd Jackson, PharmD

Dr. Todd Jackson is the Vice President of Pharmacy Services at Cape Fear Valley Health, focusing on operational efficiency and enhancing patient care. He joined Cape Fear Valley in 2024, bringing over 28 years of healthcare leadership experience, including roles with Cardinal Health, GSK, and ECU Brody School of Medicine/ECU Health. Inspired by his grandfather’s chronic illness, Dr. Jackson is passionate about transforming healthcare delivery for easier access. He holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Campbell University and a Master of Health Care Administration from UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Jackson’s strategic leadership continues to advance Cape Fear Valley’s mission.

Brad Baxley

Bradley Baxley

Bradley Baxley, Vice President of Information Services & Technology, joined Cape Fear Valley Health in 1998 and leads all Information Services & Technology (IST) application areas, including Epic, Clinical and Patient Financial Services, Business Applications, and the IST Project Management Office. With prior experience in IT within the NC Community College System and the private insurance industry, he is dedicated to leveraging technology to enhance patient care and system growth. Bradley’s passion for healthcare stems from his deep connection to the community, where he and his family receive care. His leadership in IST ensures Cape Fear Valley stays at the forefront of innovation, improving experiences for both patients and staff. He holds an AAS in Computer Programming from FTCC, a BS in Healthcare Administration from Methodist University, and an MBA in Project Management from Fayetteville State University.
