What is Anxiety?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety is a persistent feeling of anxiety or dread that interferes with daily life. The mental health disorder doesn’t go away and may get worse over time

Symptoms of Anxiety

You can help your loved one recognize the signs of anxiety. Some general signs of anxiety include:

  • Physical symptoms
  • Cold or sweaty hands
  • Dry mouth
  • Heart palpitations
  • Nausea
  • Mental symptoms
  • Feeling panic, fear and uneasiness
  • Nightmares
  • Uncontrollable, obsessive thoughts
  • Behavioral symptoms
  • Inability to be still and calm
  • Ritualistic behaviors, such as washing hands repeatedly

When to Seek Care for Anxiety

If you think you or someone you love has symptoms of anxiety, talk to your healthcare provider. Primary care providers will talk with you about your symptoms during the visit. They will review your medical history to check if the symptoms may be caused by certain medications or other health conditions.

Your primary care doctor can also help refer you or your loved one to our licensed mental health specialists. Your mental health well-being is just as important as your physical health. Contact your primary doctor today.

If you’re thinking about hurting yourself, either go to the Cape Fear Valley Health Emergency Department or call 911.
