2024-2025

Caroline Joncas, PharmD

Research Project: Justification of a specialty pharmacy discharge medication reconciliation program: a descriptive study
First Position after Residency: Oncology Pharmacist, Cape Fear Valley Health Fayetteville, NC

I chose Cape Fear Valley for its diverse rotation options, supportive environment, and flexibility which allowed me to adapt my training to match my evolving goals. Throughout the year, I found immense value in the belief that, “It doesn’t matter where you start the year; it matters how you end it.”

My favorite experience was my time spent in the cancer center, where I was able to deepen my knowledge and solidify my career direction. I encourage incoming residents to lean on their co-residents and foster collaboration over competition.

Katlyn Womble, PharmD, MSPH

Research Project: Impact of oral antibiotics on length of stay in patients with gram negative rod bacteremia
First Position after Residency: PGY2 Internal Medicine, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC

I chose CFV for its genuine family atmosphere where I felt valued not just as a resident, but as a person. The supportive environment made all the difference in my growth. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of embracing the fact that I’m still a learner and it’s okay not to have all the answers.

My favorite experience was the PACU rotation, where I was able to dive into the perioperative setting, something I hadn’t explored much in school, and gained a lot of new knowledge. For new residents, my advice is don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. This year is your opportunity to learn as much as you can and grow both professionally and personally.

Morgan Carhart, PharmD

Research Project: Comparison of analgesia following coronary bypass grafting with the use of scheduled acetaminophen
First Position after Residency: PGY2 Internal Medicine, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC

I chose Cape Fear Valley because of the wide variety of rotations offered and the program’s strong emphasis on internal medicine. The opportunity to teach through Campbell University was also a major draw, allowing me to develop both clinically and academically. One of the most valuable lessons I learned during residency was the importance of self-care, making time for myself was essential to being able to care for others effectively. My favorite part of the experience was the strong sense of community that formed among co-residents, whether we were tackling challenges together or sharing laughs while building our “meme wall.” If I had one piece of advice for incoming residents, it would be to start projects early, especially the continuing education (CE) presentation, and never be afraid to ask for help. It's okay to not know everything; learning and growing are what residency is all about.

Olivia Hill, PharmD

Research Project: Oral vancomycin versus fidaxomicin for treatment of Clostridiodes difficile infection
First Position after Residency: PGY2 Emergency medicine, University Health, San Antonio, TX

I chose CFV because of the family atmosphere and the caring environment fostered by both the staff and residents. The personal and professional growth seen in previous residents was a major factor in my decision. One of the most valuable things I’ve learned during my time here is the importance of having a strong support system, including co-residents and preceptors, who you can rely on for advice and guidance.

My favorite experiences were during the ED and critical care rotations, where I was able to grow in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. My advice for new residents is simple: It’s okay to be wrong the first time; we are all learning, and it’s the ability to improve and get it right on your second try that really counts.

Brynna Corley, PharmD

Research Project:Utilization of remote continuous glucose monitoring services by pharmacists in an outpatient endocrine clinic
First Position after Residency: PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency, Novant Health, Winston-Salem, NC

I was originally attracted to the PGY1 Ambulatory Care Residency at Cape Fear Valley because of the family-feel atmosphere from the preceptors and current residents and the variety of rotations offered both inpatient and outpatient which ensured all my interests were explored. The most valuable aspect of the PGY1 program for myself has been seeing the growth in my confidence in making clinical decisions over this year.

My advice for the incoming residents is to keep all your options open and be open to taking new opportunities that may arise.

Faatihah Meunier, PharmD

Research Project:Impact of 340b pricing program on medication assistance program enrollment rates in uninsured patients
First Position after Residency: Clinical pharmacist, Reliance Treatment Center, Georgia

Beyond the welcoming environment presented during my interview, I was initially drawn to Cape Fear Valley's unique learning experiences at the Cumberland County Public Health Department, CARE Clinic, and Better Health Clinic. With this residency I had a lot of unique opportunities, some of which included the ability to expand upon teaching, public health, and clinical ability. I had the opportunity to be involved in patient assistance programs and directing patients to helpful programs in the surrounding community that were available to them. My favorite experience was the geriatric precepting month. I had the opportunity to be a preceptor and was able to establish appropriate boundaries and expectations that allowed for mutual respect and encouragement as the students and I grew in our abilities. This helped me tailor their experience and training to help the students and myself grow and develop in a formal setting.

The most valuable thing I learned was to give myself some grace. This is a learning experience, so I found it beneficial to tailor it to my goals and aspirations. There were things I did not know, but I was learning and growing, so I gave myself grace along the way. My advice for new, incoming residents is to challenge yourself. Make the most of the experience. Take advantage of opportunities that are available to you. I was able to get involved in the long-acting injectable training and Better Breathers support group opportunities. These were not in my initial plans, but became available to me later on.

Research Project: Impact of pharmacist-led intervention on maintenance inhaler appropriateness in COPD exacerbations

First Position after Residency: Specialty Pharmacist, Cape Fear Valley Health, Fayetteville, NC

I was drawn to the PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program at Cape Fear Valley because of the strong outpatient clinic presence and the opportunity to learn in a setting where preceptors foster supportive and collaborative relationships. The sense of community among the preceptors and their investment in resident development stood out to me, and I felt this would be a place where I could grow both professionally and personally. Among the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of maintaining a positive mindset during stressful times, which enabled me to stay focused and provide the best possible care to my patients.

My favorite rotation was in the endocrine clinic, where I enjoyed managing complex cases and learning from challenging situations. To future residents, my best advice is always be willing to challenge yourself and push beyond your comfort zone; what you put into your residency is exactly what you’ll get out of it.

River Medlin, PharmD

Research Project: Utilization of pharmacist instructors in didactic curricula across graduate healthcare education programs

First Position after Residency: pursuing ambulatory care opportunities

I was initially attracted to the Community-Based Residency Program at Cape Fear Valley because of its flexibility and the diverse training opportunities it offers. One of the key factors that drew me to the program was the chance to train with Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners, which aligns closely with my career goals. During my time at Cape Fear, one of the most valuable skills I developed was learning how to conduct patient visits efficiently and effectively. I also gained meaningful experience in precepting student pharmacists.

My favorite aspect of residency was participating in primary care roles, particularly the family medicine, endocrine and geriatric rotations. These experiences provided in-depth exposure to diabetes care and chronic disease management—areas I am passionate about.

To future residents, my advice is this: you will encounter challenges that are new and unfamiliar. Embrace them with grace and patience toward yourself, knowing that every experience is shaping you into a stronger and more capable clinician.
