Closure of Labor and Delivery Services at Betsy Johnson Hospital

DUNN, NC – It is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of labor and delivery services at Betsy Johnson Hospital within Harnett Health, effective October 15, 2023. This decision comes after careful consideration and reflects the changing healthcare landscape, including declining demand for maternity services, recruitment challenges, and financial realities.

Over the past few years, Harnett Health has faced a range of challenges common to the healthcare industry. These include evolving healthcare dynamics brought about by the pandemic, recruitment challenges, and financial constraints. These challenges prompted us to conduct a thorough review of our services to ensure that we continue to meet the healthcare needs of our community effectively.

While the closure of labor and delivery services is indeed a significant change, it is essential to emphasize our unwavering commitment to patient care and well-being. Expectant mothers who had planned to deliver at our facility will continue to receive exceptional care at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. We are actively collaborating with Cape Fear Valley to ensure a seamless transition for these mothers.

Our outpatient Obstetrics and Gynecology prenatal clinic will remain fully operational, offering the same high-quality prenatal care and post-partum follow-up care that our patients have come to trust. In addition to this transition, we want to reassure our community that our inpatient Gynecological services will continue to remain open. This reaffirms our dedication to comprehensive care for women in our community. We believe that maintaining these services aligns with our mission to prioritize the health and well-being of our patients in every way possible.

We understand that these changes may bring about various emotions, including uncertainty about the future. We are committed to assisting our patients in transferring their medical records and birth plans. Additionally, we are committed to supporting our employees through this transition and will work diligently to identify opportunities within our health system for those affected. Additional resources and support will also be provided to assist during this period of change.

Betsy Johnson remains dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to our community. We value the trust our community has placed in us, and we are exploring opportunities to enhance our services in other areas of healthcare delivery.

Patients can reach out to our Patient Relations department at (910) 766-7126 with any immediate questions or concerns.

While this chapter may be closing, the impact we have made together will continue to resonate in the lives of those we have cared for. Our commitment to the health and well-being of our community remains steadfast, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community in other important aspects of healthcare.
