About Varshaben Songara, MD
Dr. Songara has been involved in educating rotating Campbell university students since she joined Harnett Health System in 2015. She started teaching residents in inpatient setting since start of our Harnett Health Family Medicine program in 2016. She became Core Faculty in July 2017 and was promoted to Associate Program Director position in June 2021. Dr. Songara received her undergraduate and graduate medical education in India and completed her Family Medicine residency training at Cleveland Clinic - Akron General Hospital in Akron, Ohio. She is board certified in Family Medicine since 2012 and certified with a Focused Designation in Hospital Medicine since 2018. She is also a graduate of the Campbell University Masters of Health Professions Education program. Dr. Songara has worked as hospitalist since graduation and currently serving as our FM inpatient rotation director. She is passionate about Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and serving as POCUS director for FM, IM and TY residency programs at Harnett Health System. She is currently working with the Society of Teachers for Family Medicine (STFM) POCUS task force to create POCUS curriculum guidelines. Dr. Songara believes in successful residency program start with empowering residency leaders to pursue excellence. She is currently serving as an APD representative to the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD) board. She is also involved in creating the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Southeast learning hub and educating Southeast regional residency leaders in Competence Based Medical Education. She received scholarship to complete a Strengthening Outcome and Assessment in Residency (SOAR) fellowship which is a joint effort of the AFMRD and the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) to advance excellence in family medicine residency education using outcomes data. Her focus of research was comparing FM residency milestone progression in US medical graduate vs International medical graduates. Dr. Songara has been living in the Triangle area with her family since 2013. Besides teaching, she enjoys learning classical Indian dance and doing outdoor activities with her family.
