We are glad you found your way here. Choosing where to spend your transitional year is an important decision, and we are excited to share what makes our program such a supportive place to learn, grow, and thrive.
Our ACGME-accredited Transitional Year Program, established in 2017, offers 20 residency positions each year. Residents gain hands-on experience in Internal Medicine, Primary Care, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Infectious Disease, with elective time to explore individual interests and prepare for advanced specialty training.
Training takes place at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, our 762-bed flagship hospital in Fayetteville. As a major referral center for southeastern North Carolina, the hospital exposes residents to a diverse patient population with complex, high-acuity medical needs, creating a dynamic environment that offers constant challenges and rich opportunities for learning.
Our community is strengthened by our proximity to Fort Bragg, the largest military base in the United States, which adds to the diversity of the patients we serve. We are proud to have been named one of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access. This recognition highlights both our quality of care and our commitment to historically underserved populations.
The program also features a state-of-the-art Simulation Center, where residents build skills, teamwork, and confidence in realistic clinical scenarios. Looking ahead, the opening of the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine in 2026 will bring even more opportunities for collaboration, teaching, and scholarship on our campus.
Most of all, you’ll find a program that welcomes you and values you not only as a resident, but as a colleague. We are committed to supporting your growth, your well-being, and your success, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you as you build a foundation that will carry you throughout your career.
