Overview

The Emergency Medicine Residency at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, in keeping with our System’s mission, was created to train future physicians to improve the quality of every life they touch.  Our faculty, staff, and residents share the values of teamwork, leadership, professionalism, integrity, diversity, and the ethical treatment for all patients.

Located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Cape Fear is an active trauma, stroke, and heart center—enjoying top performer status in several of its disease specific certifications.  With a unique patient mix that combines rural, urban, suburban, civilian, and military populations, we provide quality care to over 130 thousand patients per year in our Adult and Pediatric Emergency Department at our primary site alone, placing us as the busiest Emergency Department in the state of NC and one of the top fifteen in the nation.  We serve as the primary referral center for multiple counties in southeastern North Carolina that have limited access to primary care.  In this capacity we see a patient population that exhibits the breadth and depth of disease usually encountered only at large inner city academic institutions.

Cape Fear Valley Health System is a multi-billion-dollar health care entity that includes eight hospitals, over eight thousand employees and a catchment population of over one million patients.  Cape Fear also owns and operates the award-winning Cumberland County EMS System, providing ground and air care to our patients, thus adding to the wealth of experience available to our trainees.  In the last ten years we have grown from a single associated training program to thirteen training programs and fellowships and over 400 trainees and we are still growing.  In 2026 Cape Fear will be opening its own medical school on campus as well in partnership with Methodist University.

With a priority placed on resident wellness, our location in the heart of North Carolina provides proximity to both the NC beaches and mountains with multiple hobbies, interests, and activities available to our residents to participate in their ample downtime.

The faculty at Cape Fear is comprised of diverse group of physicians with a wealth of academic, military, and community experience.  Additionally, many faculty have fellowship or residency training in several specialty areas including Pediatrics, EMS and pre-hospital care, Hyperbarics, Ultrasound, Education, Internal Medicine, Hospital Administration, Wilderness Medicine, Military medicine and Critical Care.  This dedicated group of teachers has a singular focus—preparing our residents to face the ever-changing practice of Emergency Medicine and assisting them to become the best they can be for themselves and the patients they serve.
