Womack Cape Fear Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program is 60 months in duration.
The WAMC Cape Fear Residency program is approved to accept up to 4 residents each year (2 military / 2 civilian).
The WCF program does not accept resident transfers from other programs once the academic year begins.
Every resident has access to a variety of resources to help their mental health, including access to Womack and Cape Fear Behavioral Health services which provides different options based on the needs of the resident. In addition, the residency leadership has an open-door policy to discuss any concerns that may arise. The ombudsperson is an additional resource, always available to any resident, and is a more neutral option available for extra support outside the Emergency Department. To reach the ombudsperson contact the GME office directly.
Cape Fear Valley Graduate Medical Education hosts multiple Wellness events throughout the academic year. Notably, there are 2 wellness afternoons each year, a 1-day retreat in October, and Thank a Resident Day. Each wellness event includes a different array of activities available for the Resident to join in. As a Resident, you can expect the activities to occur at an event to range from food, arts & crafts, team building, games, and mindfulness exercises. The Special Events Committee takes recommendations and feedback from Residents to ensure the events are created and planned with the Resident in mind.
The Orthopedic Surgery program has the primary goal of graduating well-rounded, highly competent orthopedic surgeons who can immediately practice orthopedics or pursue fellowships. Four residents are admitted annually through a highly selective process. Two through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and two through the Military Match Program. The program's educational philosophy believes that the best environment for learning clinical medicine is achieved with 1 patient, 1 attending and 1 resident. Graduated responsibility in the operating room, as well as pre- and post-operative planning phases, is progressed so at the end of the program each resident is comfortable and competent in all subspecialty areas.
