Foramen Ovale (#1)
Opening in septum between Right & Left atria
Allows blood to by-pass the lungs
Approximately 50% of blood volume passes through this shunt
Ductus Arteriosus (#2)
Passage situated between the Pulmonary Artery (PA)
& Aorta
In fetal days, blood leaves the PA & enters the aorta: we refer to this as a RIGHT to LEFT shunt
Again, allows blood to by-pass the lungs
Approximately 30% of blood volume passes through this shunt
If perpetuated after birth we will know it as the Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
Ductus Venosus (#3)
Opening located on the underside of the liver in the Portal System
Allows the umbilical vessels access to and from the placenta
