Outpatient Speech Language Pathology

Who is a Speech-Language Pathologist?
A speech language pathologist is a professional educated to evaluate and treat speech and language disorders. They are required to obtain a master’s degree from an accredited university which includes completing over 350 hours of hands on training in the areas of speech, language and swallowing with children and adults. They then spend their first nine months of employment (known as the clinical fellowship year) under the direct supervision of a certified speech language pathologist. 

Speech-language pathologists often work with other professionals such as occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologisist and doctors evaluate and treat individuals with communication disorders. 

Communication is the ability to express as well as understand a message. This can be done by speaking writing, or gesturing. Sometimes, individuals experience speech or language deficitsthat hinder their ability to communicate.

What does a Speech-Language Evaluation involve?
The speech-language pathologist completes an assessment of speech and language skills utilizing formal and informal measures. Formal measures include standardized test batteries.  Informal measures may include observation and caregiver interviews. Type and extent of assessment depends on what kind of problems individuals are experiencing and how serious the problems are. Once you have been evaluated, treatment plans are created to focus on improving the communication skills that have been affected, to include language, cognitition, voice and intelligibility.
