Cape Fear Valley To Again Hold Umoja Health Clinic And Fair

8/19/2019

FAYETTEVILLE - Cape Fear Valley Health’s physician residency program is getting its chance to shine in the public eye.

Now in its third year, the medical residency program will send some of its best and brightest to help staff this year’s free health clinic and hair fair at the 27th Annual Umoja Festival. The event is Saturday, Aug. 24, inside Smith Recreation Center at Seabrook Park. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Umoja Festival health clinic and fair has become a community staple, providing free, potentially life-saving health screenings and information to the thousands of uninsured in Cumberland County. It’s possible due to Cape Fear Valley Health’s ongoing collaboration with area health agencies.

This year, Cape Fear Valley Internal Medicine physician residents, Fayetteville State University’s Nursing program and Campbell University’s Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine are teaming up to perform free check-ups for adults during the health clinic. Tests will include blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body mass index, and lung function checks.

Clinic participants will receive on-the-spot consultation for test results. Those without a primary care physician or insurance can get a referral to an area clinic for follow-up care. Screenings will be held in the center’s gym on a first-come, first-served basis.

The health fair will be in the center’s multipurpose room and include a wide array of informational booths. The Cumberland County Department of Health will offer information about WIC programs, child care coordination, teen wellness, family planning and adolescent parenting.

Other attending agencies attending include Cape Fear Valley Health, The CARE Clinic, Cumberland HealthNet, Cumberland County Wellness Campaign, Cumberland County Schools Health Program, Stedman-Wade Health Center, Fayetteville Police Department and many more.

Organized by the Umoja Group, the annual Umoja Festival is a celebration of African-American heritage and unity. To learn more about the event, visit the Umoja Group Inc. on Facebook or email umojagroupfay@gmail.com.

Cape Fear Valley Health’s physician residency program launched in the fall of 2017 with a mission to train new generations of physicians intent on working in rural areas. Campbell University’s Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine is the academic sponsor for the program.
