ELIZABETHTOWN – Bladen Healthcare employees played Santa’s little helpers recently by donating toys and food items for needy families.

The donated items were collected during the health system’s Annual Employee Toy and Food Drive held each December. This year’s toy haul was delivered to the Bladen County Department of Social Services to be given to children. The food was donated to the Bladen Crisis Assistance Food Bank.

Roxie Wells, M.D., Bladen Healthcare President, said giving back to the community took on even more meaning this year due to Hurricane Florence’s devastation. Bladen Coounty experienced record-flooding and property damage which is still being felt today.

“I want to thank our employees for continuing their tradition of serving the community,” Dr. Wells said. “They not only provide exceptional healthcare to patients, but also go the extra mile to ensure we assist the community in many other ways.”

The Bladen Crisis Assistance program was created to help provide financial assistance to low-income households that struggle to pay utility bills. The non-profit program also operates a food bank, which provides free meals to needy residents once a week. Bladen Healthcare’s donated food items will be used by the food bank.
