A vital part of Fayetteville and surrounding communities, Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital continues to touch the lives of families, friends and neighbors.
The hospital’s commitment to providing personal, quality care has remained constant since its inception in 1901, when Dr. Jacob Franklin Highsmith established Highsmith Hospital as the first private hospital in North Carolina. With the help of Dr. William Thomas Rainey, the hospital grew into one of the leading medical facilities in the region.
In 1983, the new Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital opened in its current location on Robeson Street, with state-of-the-art medical capabilities and all private rooms.
On June 1, 2004, Highsmith-Rainey began a new chapter in its proud history, opening long term acute-care beds, including a four-bed Intensive Care Unit. Long term acute care is care for patients who are very sick and require stays of 25 days or longer.
At the same time, Highsmith-Rainey’s Emergency Department became Highsmith-Rainey ExpressCare, one of three located throughout Fayetteville.
Highsmith-Rainey is accredited by The Joint Commission. The hospital remains linked to its historical past, while it embraces the future as an institution renowned for its compassionate, quality care.2019 Community Health Needs Assessment Report
