Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)
Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is an angina therapy used for patients who cannot have surgery or those who have exhausted all surgical options. This non-invasive, outpatient treatment works to relieve or eliminate chronic chest pain that patients suffer from.
Treatment involves compressing your lower limbs to increase blood flow toward your heart. The goal is to lower the resistance in your legs’ blood vessels so that blood can be pumped to your heart more easily, ultimately decreasing the amount of work your heart muscle has to do.
Treatment typically consists of one-hour treatment sessions once a day, five days a week for seven weeks. EECP may provide benefits long after the treatment is completed and some patients remain symptom free for years.
