Friends of the Cancer Center
Friends of the Cancer Center was the first friends group formed in October of 1989 by a group of dedicated people who wanted to help and support cancer patients right here at home. In April 2002, the group joined Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation. Our goal is to nurture and support cancer patients and their families during a profoundly emotional time to improve the quality of our patient’s lives.
Over 80 volunteers provide support, serve refreshments, and take care of patients’ needs everyday. Spiritual support volunteers are also available.  We also provide a resource center with books, videos, pamphlets, and a computer for accessing information about cancer and treatments. Through fundraisers, such as our annual Ribbon Walk at Festival Park in Downtown Fayetteville, and donations we are able to provide prescription medicines, emergency funds for utilities and rent payments, dietary supplements, gas vouchers, wigs, hats and scarves. A Complementary Medicine Program called the Oasis is supported by the Friends of the Cancer Center. This program includes massage therapy, Healing Touch, reflexology, art therapy, support groups, Tai Chi classes, and nutrition classes for cancer patients. Each fall, we sponsor Camp Rockfish for our patients and their families to celebrate life. Visit our boutique, Pavilion Palms at Health Pavilion North. It has items specific for our patients such as skin care items, wigs, and scarves. Friends of Children
Friends of Children was founded in 1991 by a group of community leaders and medical professionals who recognized that both children and their families are in crisis when a child is ill. By identifying and addressing the special needs of our community’s youngest and most vulnerable patients, Friends of Children is able to support pediatric services throughout the health system. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Behavioral Health Care, Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center, Highsmith-Rainey, The Children’s Center and Playroom, Family Centered Care Unit, Pediatric Emergency Department, Health Pavilion North and many other areas receive support through Friends of Children’s various programs. For over a decade, Friends of Children has hosted the L.B. Floyd Friends of Children’s Classic - this area’s largest golf fund-raising event. Projects made possible through this event include construction of an outdoor Pediatric Therapeutic Playground, implementation of a Pediatric Asthma Education Program, Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention training for all families with newborns and support for the Diabetes and Endocrine Center. In 2008, The Friends of Children Junior Golf Classic was added as a way to involve our community’s youth.
