Q: What is Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation?
A: Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation is the fundraising entity for Cape Fear Valley Health System, a community health care network serving a six-county area in the central southern area of North Carolina. The network is comprised of hospitals, primary care facilities, emergency services, behavioral health care services, a rehabilitation center, hospice services, and a fitness facility. Cape Fear Valley Health System provides nearly $87.5 million in uncompensated care for indigent care.
More than 40 years ago, leaders in Cumberland County worked to develop a state-of-the-art hospital to serve families right here at home. Their dream was to provide high-quality medical care for all families regardless of their ability to pay.
Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation was created in 1996 by a group of dedicated community volunteers in collaboration with Cape Fear Valley Health System leadership. Dr. Harold L. Godwin served as the founding president.
Six Friends groups are part of the Foundation. These groups and the volunteers that direct them help develop programs to assist patients with needs that contribute to the healing process, but that go beyond the scope of Cape Fear Valley’s mission to provide medical care and treatment.
The Foundation is governed by an independent, voluntary, Board of Directors that oversees its activity and use of funds. Members include our community’s business, civic, higher education, and philanthropic leaders, physicians and other individuals who care about the quality of healthcare here at home and access to healthcare by the underserved.
Q: Why should I support the Foundation?
A: Cape Fear Valley Health System’s mission is to provide nursing and medical care to families in Cumberland County and in the surrounding areas regardless of their ability to pay. Because we are a non-profit hospital, revenues generated by the Hospital go back in to the Health System in the form of new services, advanced diagnostic technology, additional cancer-treating equipment and other needs. Our goal is to keep pace with the growing number of people here at home who need medical care.
We recognize that the healing process involves many factors, including peace of mind. While the Health System’s primary focus is on providing quality nursing and medical care, the Foundation’s focus is on helping provide greater access to healthcare by the underserved, assisting patients in need with transportation, food supplements, medications, and other emergency needs while they are being treated at Cape Fear Valley.
