New graduate RNs may apply for positions listed on the Job Postings and will be hired directly to the unit. New grad RNs who do not participate in a specialty school will be provided with a new extended residency orientation program. 

The purpose of the residency program is to provide a supported transition from nursing education to the practice setting. The residency will consist of classroom activities interspersed with clinicals with a preceptor on their home unit. 

Cape Fear Valley offers specialty schools in the following nursing specialties: NICU, Emergency Department, Critical Care and Progressive Care. These programs are offered for new nursing graduates, as well as experienced nurses, wishing to change specialties. Best of all, students are paid while they complete the school, and upon graduation are ready for new challenges!

Critical Care Program

The Critical Care Program is designed to develop RNs, both academically and clinically. Both experienced and new grad RNs may apply. The 12-week course combines lectures, videos and interactive group discussions dealing with critical thinking scenarios/case studies to foster learning. 

Observation of procedures in Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Open-Heart Surgery and skills practice labs will help to prepare the new critical care nurse for this challenging environment. Finally, hands on experience during the clinical rotations with experienced preceptors in critical care in the various ICUs will complete the learning process.

GOALS: The Critical Care Program will:
1. Support the development of a competent and proficient nurse.
2. Build consistent decision-making skills and foster the development of critical thinking skills.
3. Promote adaptation of the novice nurse to the work environment in the critical care arena.

Emergency Department Program

Do you like working in an exciting, fast-paced environment? Then Cape Fear Valley Medical Center's Emergency Department is perfect for you.

Our 57-bed emergency department is one of the busiest in the state. In addition to the main emergency department, Cape Fear Valley has a Children’s Emergency Department,
a Chest Pain Center, a Fast Track area and a Trauma Center.

NICU Internship

Nurses interested in working in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit can apply for an internship, which lasts 12 weeks and typically has 5 openings per course session.

Candidates go through an in-depth internship, paired with a preceptor for the entire 12 weeks.Upon completion, work in our 44-bed NICU department, including a 23-bed Intermediate Care Nursery
and a 21-bed Level III unit. 

Our NICU team includes four board-certified neonatologists, as well as neonatal nurse practitioners, and offers a clinical ladder program for nursing professionals interested in career advancement.

Other opportunities for learning

The Training and Development Department provides orientation and continuing education for the entire health system. 

All nurses receive a comprehensive orientation during their first two weeks of employment, including computer training. This nursing core orientation occurs prior to the unit-specific orientation, which is tailored to the individual nurse's needs.

The Training and Development Department also offers many clinical and management classes at no cost to employees. Clinical classes include ACLS, PALS, CPR and other classes. Many classes for professional development are also offered online for the employee’s convenience.

An on-site MBA program with a concentration in healthcare management is offered through a partnership between Fayetteville State University and Cape Fear Valley Health System. It is offered at a very reasonable cost. A BSN completion program is also offered on-site for RNs who would like to continue their education.

In addition, Cape Fear Valley offers nurses and allied health professionals clinical ladder programs to reward professional career development.
