The Student Nurse Extern Program is a summer paid Externship for selected ECU BSN Students currently enrolled in the nursing program and an uprising senior.
If selected, the Extern will be expected to work 40 hours a week during the program at Cape Fear Valley Health. The Nurse Extern provides age-specific patient care under the supervision of a BSN-prepared RN according to the unit’s scope of service and within the Extern’s scope of practice. The Nurse Extern is assigned to the Preceptor/Coach rather than to patients. The Extern participates in education of self and others, works effectively with the health care team, and conducts him/herself in a manner supportive of the philosophy of Patient Care Services. You will have the opportunity to observe, interact and work as a team member with nurses and other health care disciplines.
This summer program is from May through August. During the first two weeks of the internship it is mandatory to attend hospital and patient services orientation. Upon completion of the externship, you may have the opportunity to continue employment at Cape Fear Valley Health.
This program will allow you to experience direct patient care ("hands-on" experience) in a clinical area of interest. Placement for the summer program will be offered in clinical areas with respect to the applicant's qualifications and availability of unit positions.

Interviews of selected qualified applicants will be conducted by managers between April – May.
Notification of selection will be in May.
Acceptance into a position is contingent upon HR background/criminal checks, Medication Math Test/Basic Dysrhythmia, and a pre-employment physical exam, which includes drug and alcohol screening.
