Swing Bed Program

Bladen County Hospital offers a Swing Bed Program for patients who have been hospitalized for surgery or recovery from an illness that aren't quite ready to return home.

The Swing Bed Program allows us to provide short-term skilled nursing care and/or rehabilitation in Cape Fear Valley's Bladen County Hospital. You'll be able recover and receive any rehabilitation services you may need before returning home.

For your stay to be covered by Medicare's swing bed program under the "Skilled Nursing Facility" benefit, you have to meet certain criteria. This criteria includes:

  • Swing bed stay must be related to a hospital stay.
  • The doctor must determine a need for daily skilled care, such as IV therapy, skin and wound care, physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy.
  • Patient must be willing to participate in the daily skilled care.
  • Patient must be hospitalized as an Acute Care Patient for a minimum of three consecutive days prior to admission as a swing bed patient. Prior stay can be at any acute care hospital. Observation days do not count toward these days. They must be within 30 days of the hospital stay.
  • Medicare patients must have Part A benefits.

Medicare will cover up to 20 days in full and up to an additional 80 days with a patient copay, as long as this criteria are met. Medicare supplements will usually pay the deductible as long as Medicare continues coverage. Your individual coverage will depend on how long you meet the criteria. The average length of stay in a swing bed is about 15 days.
